Hmm, do you mean using a lie to cover up something that will surely hurt them?
If so, i think it depends on the situation. although, one must remember that maybe telling them that 'hurtful something' will cause them to look at things for the better? As in, you cannot shelter someone from the world for so long and then expect them to be able to defend themselves against attacks when they roam free.
Or did you mean which one is worse: not telling someone the truth because it'll hurt their feelings vs lying. are they not more of the same? if you don't tell someone the truth, you're left to lie. unless you chose to ignore it and have it catch up with you later... so perhaps the former is worse. it's all a matter of moral principles really.
