Wh3t do4s 1t 3ll m3an??

OK, I have lived in this fine country for years, I teach the youth of the country and am attempting to learn arabic but get so confused by this number/letter arabic business. What does it all mean??? Can anyone explain it to me??? I live in perpetual confusion and want to be cool too!!!!! (Sad I know but must attempt to be funky)
Please if you can give me a basic number = arabic letter guide I would forever be in your debt!!!

I thought 3 means E, 7 means L.

Ugh, I'll wait and watch for other comments

Well, you have to see the arabic letters first..
The letter "ع" looks alot like the number 3... when u hear the name "Ali" in arabic u notice the "a" in the begining of the name is heavy.. so when i want to write the name Ali but with a phonetic indication to how the "a" is pronounced, i put the number 3 instead... so his name is 3li... The number 7 looks alot like the letter "ح"... the letter in the begining of the name Hamad, is also quite heavy, so we write it "7amad".. and so forth..
Lemme try to make it a simple table:

3 = A, as in Ali = 3li
'3 = Gh, as in Ghada (lunch in arabic)= '3ada (the apostrophe resembles the dot in the letter غ)
5 = Kh, as in Khlood= 5lood
6 = T, as in Talal= 6alal
7 = H, as in Hamad or Muhammed= 7amad or Mu7ammed
8 = Q (can't think of an example lol)
9 = S, as in Sabah = 9aba7 (our emir, for example?)

and i think that's about it lol... sorry for the long comment, but i hope it's useful :D

I am surprised that it was first used in Egypt. I always thought it came from the Gulf lol.
